Just south of Kill Devil Hills and north of Hatteras Island is the town of Nags Head. In a sense Nags Head is larger than its town limits. Frequently, "Nags Head" and "the Outer Banks" are interchanged as one and the same. The town's name is derived from the folklore told of old nags (aged horses) that lumbered along the shoreline with a lantern swaying from their necks, causing ship captains to mistake the lanterns for lights on seagoing vessels and therefore luring them to their demise… whether this story true or not, it is said to have been a pirate’s trick to retrieve the bounty of the shipwrecks that were caused. Nags Head is home to The Outer Banks Hospital, the areas only hospital as well as The Nags Head Golf Links, a Scottish links-style championship golf course that offers a truly unique golfing experience.
